Mental Health

Sadly, many people underestimate the seriousness of mental health problems. Instead of show sympathy, they suggest that individuals suffering from mental problems should simply, "Get over it." However, mental health problems are extremely serious. This is evident by the fact that 450 million people worldwide suffer from some form of mental illness, and that 873,000 people commit suicide each year. There are varying degrees of mental illnesses. Some people suffer from mild depression that comes and goes over the years. Depression of this sort may be seasonal, or affected by the weather. On the other hand, some people have a continuous battle with depression that results in hospitalization or the inability to function on a daily basis.

Mental health problems are caused by various factors. Psychiatrists believe that some forms of mental illnesses are hereditary. For example, if a parent, grandparent, or sibling suffers from a condition such as bipolar, schizophrenia, social anxiety, and so forth - you are twice as likely to develop the same condition. However, some forms of mental illnesses are caused by trauma or life experiences. For example, cancer patients and those living with serious illnesses are prone to develop depression. In addition, panic disorders are common in those who have lived through a loss, rape, hostage, or robbery.

Fortunately, there is help for those suffering from mental health problems. Individuals living with mild forms of depression may benefit from anti-depressant medications. These drugs are safe for people of all ages and are intended to balance moods. Along with anti-depressants, some individuals may seek the help of a mental health professional. Mental health professionals are specialized and trained in various areas of psychology. Professionals provide one-on-one counseling, which helps patients to cope and overcome their condition. In rare cases, patients may require long-term care in a mental health facility.
