Dental Health
Dental health is important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Although it is recommended that each person visit a dentist at least twice a year, some people neglect their dental health. Fear of the dentist or simply feeling that dental visits are unnecessary is the root of neglect. Yet, ignoring dental check-ups could cause long-term gum and teeth damage. Conditions that may go undetected include cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and so forth. Most of these conditions are diagnosed by a dentist. In addition, years of plague and tarter buildup result in discolored teeth and bad breath.
Some people neglect their dental health because their health insurance does not cover dental. However, this is not an excuse because dental plans are very inexpensive. In fact, those without dental coverage could obtain a dental savings plan for their entire family for under $20/month. The purpose of dental savings plan is to discount dental procedures. On average, members receive a savings of up to 60%. Typical procedures covered by plans include routine cleanings, cavity fills, root canals, tooth extractions, braces, surgeries, and so forth. Dental savings plan are not insurance, thus patients must pay upfront for services.
Dental health has several benefits. Those who regularly visit the dentist have cleaner, whiter teeth. In addition, these persons are protecting themselves against gum disease and tooth decay. Dental visits are also important for children. In between dental visits, it is wise to adopt healthy habits at home. These might include brushing teeth at least three times a day. Flossing also contributes to dental health. Avoid crunching on hard candy and ice. This may cause a chipped tooth or TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder). Moreover, parents should encourage their children to brush and floss regularly. Although babies and toddlers are unable to brush their own teeth, there are small toothbrushes available to clean toddler's teeth and gums.
